UGC as Ad Creative

Producing UGC and running it as a paid ad are two different decisions here is what changes and how to set it up in Meta Ads Manager

Producing UGC content and running it as a paid ad are two different decisions. The same video that works as an organic Reel may need different hooks, different CTAs, or different framing to perform as a paid placement.

Organic vs Paid: What Changes

Organic UGC relies on the algorithm for distribution. The viewer chose to be in your space by following you or showing interest in your niche. The hook needs to beat competing content from creators they already like. Ideal CTAs are "follow," "comment," "share," and "link in bio." Organic viewers tolerate 60 to 90 seconds if the value is high.

Paid UGC means you choose who sees it by interest, behaviour, location, and age. The viewer did not choose to see your content and they are scrolling through their normal feed. The hook needs to beat competing content from people they already follow. The ideal CTA is one action with a clear reward such as "get your quote," "book a call," or "see the full build." For paid content, shorter performs better and under 30 seconds is ideal for cold audiences.

What stays the same across both: the script structure of hook, problem, solution, proof, and CTA, the authenticity of the UGC style which is what makes it work on both channels, and captions which are required regardless of placement.

What Is a Dark Post

A dark post is an ad that runs in the Meta feed but does not appear on your public Facebook or Instagram page. The viewer sees it as a sponsored post. Your followers do not see it in their feed. It does not exist on your profile.

This is how most professional UGC ads are run. It means you can test 5 different hooks on 5 different ad variations without flooding your page, you can run ads for a specific offer without that offer living permanently on your public profile, and the ad is deleted when the campaign ends with no legacy content on your page.

To create a dark post in Meta Ads Manager: go to Meta Ads Manager and create a new campaign. At the ad level select "Create new ad" and not "Use existing post." Build the ad with your UGC video, copy, and CTA. Do NOT select "Facebook Page Post" or "Use Post ID" because creating fresh in Ads Manager makes it a dark post by default. Save and launch. The ad runs, your page shows nothing, and the ad disappears when you pause or end the campaign.

Setting Up Your First UGC Ad

For campaign structure when testing UGC, set the objective to Leads or Traffic if you do not have a Pixel yet. Set the budget to £5 to £7 per day per ad set. Use one ad set with 2 to 3 UGC video variations using different hooks but the same offer. Use Advantage+ Audience for audience selection.

For ad creative setup: use your hook line from the script as the primary text where the first 125 characters appear before "See more" on mobile so make the hook the first sentence. Upload your UGC video at 9:16 for Reels placement. Write a benefit-led headline under 40 characters. Use "Get Quote" or "Learn More" as your CTA button and avoid "Shop Now" for service businesses because it signals the wrong intent.

For AI disclosure: when uploading a HeyGen avatar video, select "AI-generated content" in the disclosure section. This is mandatory in 2026. Violation results in ad rejection and policy strikes.

Which UGC Videos to Run as Ads

Not every UGC video you produce should become a paid ad. The cost of testing means you want to start with your highest-confidence pieces.

Run as ads first: videos with the strongest hook that are the most specific and most pattern-interrupting, videos that feature your best proof point with the highest-credibility metric, and videos under 30 seconds which get higher completion rates on cold traffic.

Test organically first: tutorial content which is better suited to organic reach, longer-form videos where you are building authority, and content that explores angles you are less confident about.

Use organic performance to inform where to put ad spend. A Reel that gets organic comments and saves is signalling that the content resonates and is a good candidate for paid promotion.

Metrics That Change When UGC Runs as an Ad

3-Second Video View Rate

This is your hook quality score. Under 25% means the hook is not stopping scroll and you should test a new hook. 25 to 40% is acceptable and the hook is landing for some. 40% and above means the hook is working so optimise the rest of the script.

Video Play Rate (ThruPlay)

The percentage who watch to the end or to 15 seconds, whichever comes first. This measures how compelling the full video is once the hook lands. Under 15% means the content is losing people after the hook so tighten the middle section. 15 to 30% is the normal range for cold traffic UGC. 30% and above means the content is holding attention well.

CTR (Link Clicks)

For UGC Reels on Meta, target 1.5% or above as a minimum. Strong UGC gets 2.5 to 4%.

CPL

The metric that tells you if the campaign is profitable. Compare it to your ceiling which is project value divided by 10. All the video metrics feed into this one number.

Iterating on UGC Creative

The testing loop for UGC ads works in weekly cycles.

In Week 1 run 2 to 3 variations with different hooks using the same offer and same CTA. Check the 3-second view rate after 500 or more impressions.

In Week 2 kill the lowest-performing hook. Run the best hook with 2 different bodies testing problem-first versus outcome-first.

In Week 3 keep the best hook and body combination. Test 2 different CTAs.

In Month 2 produce a new batch of videos based on what the data says works. Use the same winning hook angle adapted into a new format. If Problem/Solution worked best try a Client Story using the same hook pattern.

Document every test in UGC.md under the Content Log. After 3 months you will have a clear picture of which angles work for your specific audience. This is more valuable than any course or framework.

Repurposing Organic Content as Ads

If you have organic content that performs well with comments, saves, or shares you can run it as an ad directly from Meta Ads Manager using the post ID.

Get the post ID which is visible in the URL when you open the post or under "Existing Posts" in Ads Manager. In Ads Manager at the ad creative level select "Use Existing Post." Paste the post ID. The ad will show the same post including likes and comments to your paid audience.

Social proof from organic engagement carries over to the ad. A video with 47 comments and 2,300 organic views showing under a paid placement performs better than the same video with zero engagement. When you find organically performing UGC this is the fastest path to amplifying it.
