The UGC Formats That Convert
Which formats to use, when, and why not all UGC performs equally for service businesses
Not all UGC formats perform equally. Some are natural fits for service businesses. Others are better suited to physical products. This lesson maps out which formats to use, when, and why.
Format 1: Problem/Solution Talking Head
What it is: A person, either an avatar or a real creator, speaks directly to camera, names a specific problem, introduces a specific solution, and ends with a soft CTA.
Why it works: It mirrors how people talk to each other. "I had this problem, I found this thing, you might want it too." The peer recommendation format has the highest trust signal of any ad format.
Ideal length: 15 to 45 seconds.
Script structure in order: Name the specific problem using words your audience would use and not your words. Hint at the solution to create curiosity without explaining it yet. Show or describe the outcome and what changed. State who it is for. End with one CTA and not three options.
Best for: Any service business. This is your default format.
Format 2: Before/After Screen Recording
What it is: A screen recording that shows the old situation, which is manual, clunky, and expensive, followed by the new situation which is your system live and running.
Why it works: Proof by demonstration. You are not claiming a result, you are showing it. The contrast between before and after creates the emotional shift that drives action.
Ideal length: 15 to 30 seconds of visual with 30 to 45 second voice-over.
Script structure: Open with "Here is what most [audience] are doing right now" while showing the old way. Transition with "And here is what it looks like after we fixed it" while showing the new way. Name one or two specific improvements. End with a CTA.
Best for: Web developers, automation builders, and anyone who has a tangible system to show. No avatar needed because a screen recording plus ElevenLabs voice is sufficient.
Format 3: Client Story
What it is: A structured story told in the client's voice covering the situation before, the decision to hire you, and the outcome after.
Why it works: Narrative structure is the most persuasive information format the human brain processes. A story with a problem, a decision point, and a resolution is more convincing than a list of benefits.
Ideal length: 30 to 60 seconds.
Script structure written as if the client is speaking: Open with "I run a [business type] and we were struggling with [specific problem]." Move to "I found [builder] through [channel] and decided to try it because [reason]." Then "They [specific thing they did] in [time frame]." Follow with "[Specific measurable result]." Close with "If you're dealing with [same problem], [builder] is worth talking to."
Best for: Service businesses where the transformation is significant and specific. Needs a real client result to reference even if an avatar delivers the words.
Format 4: Tutorial with Embedded Offer
What it is: Genuinely useful content that teaches something relevant to your audience with the offer appearing naturally at the end.
Why it works: People share tutorials. Algorithms boost shareable content. The viewer gets value first which creates reciprocity before the offer lands.
Ideal length: 30 to 60 seconds covering 3 to 5 quick tips.
Script structure: Open with "[Number] things every [audience] needs to [outcome]." Teach 3 to 5 genuinely useful points quickly. Bridge to "and if you want [the implementation done for you or all five working together]" then state the CTA.
Best for: Organic reach, growing an audience, and content that doubles as ad creative. Converts slower but builds brand trust over time.
Format 5: The Reaction Format
What it is: You or an avatar reacting to or commenting on a common pain point, mistake, or misconception in your niche.
Why it works: Strong opinion plus a specific target audience equals a high-engagement hook. "Stop doing this. Here's why." The contrarian framing generates clicks from people who either agree and want validation or disagree and want to argue but still watch.
Ideal length: 15 to 30 seconds.
Script structure: Open with "If you're still [doing the common mistake], this is why you're [experiencing the consequence]." Explain the problem briefly. Introduce the better approach. End with a CTA.
Best for: Builders who have a strong point of view on their niche. Works well for organic and even stronger as paid.
Format 6: B-Roll with Voice-Over
What it is: Video footage from stock, screen recording, or your own clips with an AI voice narrating the script. No talking head at all.
Why it works: Removes the face requirement entirely. The narrative carries the emotional weight. Works especially well for demonstrating processes or systems where seeing the screen is more valuable than seeing a person.
Ideal length: 20 to 40 seconds.
Tools required: ElevenLabs for voice, CapCut for editing and B-roll if needed, and Pexels or Pixabay for free stock footage.
Best for: Builders uncomfortable on camera, technical demonstrations, and content where the before and after is in software and not in a person's face.
Which Format to Start With
For a CCM builder producing their first UGC content, follow this order.
Start with the Problem/Solution Talking Head using HeyGen because it is the highest converting format and gets you familiar with the tool. Then do the Before/After Screen Recording because it is the fastest to produce if you have a working system to show. Then add the Tutorial with Embedded Offer for the strongest organic reach alongside the first two.
Run the first two as paid ads. Publish the tutorial organically. Measure which talking head format converts to leads and then make more of that one.
Platform Sizing Guide
When you export from CapCut you need the right dimensions for each platform.
Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook Reels, and YouTube Shorts all use vertical format at 1080 by 1920 pixels. Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels allow up to 90 seconds. TikTok allows up to 10 minutes but keep it under 60 seconds. YouTube Shorts allow up to 60 seconds.
Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed use square format at 1080 by 1080 pixels. Keep feed videos under 60 seconds for best performance.
For most purposes produce once at 1080 by 1920 and use it across all Reels formats. Export a square crop in CapCut for feed placements.
