Creating Your Avatar with HeyGen

The tool that removes the filming requirement entirely paste a script, select an avatar, get a video

HeyGen is the tool that removes the filming requirement. You paste a script, select an avatar, and get a video of that avatar speaking your script with accurate lip sync. The quality in 2026 is photorealistic for most use cases and viewers watching in a scrolling context will not identify the content as AI-generated unless they are specifically looking for it.

This lesson covers the full workflow: account setup, avatar selection, script input, rendering, and output settings.

Plans and Pricing

The Free plan gives you 3 watermarked videos per month. This is enough to test the tool but not to use in ads because the watermark disqualifies it.

The Creator plan at $29 per month gives you 200 credits. Avatar generation costs 20 credits per minute of finished video which means you get approximately 10 minutes of finished video per month. At 30 to 45 seconds per video that is 13 to 20 videos monthly which is sufficient for most builders starting out.

The Pro plan at $99 per month gives you more credits, priority rendering, and additional features. Move here when you are producing consistently and need volume.

Instant Avatar is a one-time purchase between $29 and $199 and creates a custom avatar based on your face. You record 2 to 5 minutes of yourself talking, upload it, and HeyGen generates an avatar that looks like you. This is separate from the monthly plan.

For this course: start with the Creator plan. Add Instant Avatar when you want content that uses your own face.

Types of Avatars in HeyGen

Stock Avatars are HeyGen's library of licensed avatar models covering dozens of options including different ethnicities, ages, genders, and presentation styles. These are available immediately on any paid plan. Best for testing scripts before investing in a custom avatar and for clients who need diverse representation.

Instant Avatar is built from your own footage. Record 2 to 5 minutes of yourself looking at the camera and speaking naturally where the words do not matter. Upload it and HeyGen processes it in minutes. The result is an avatar that looks like you lip-synced to any script you provide. Best for building your personal brand and long-term content consistency.

Avatar Templates are pre-built avatars in specific environments such as office, outdoor, and casual settings where the background is included. Useful when you do not want a plain background.

The Step-by-Step Workflow

Step 1: Prepare your script

Before opening HeyGen have your final script ready with the character count checked. Target 130 words or fewer for a 60-second video. Paste the script in a plain text file. Remove any formatting because HeyGen reads plain text.

Step 2: Open HeyGen and create a new video

Log in, go to Dashboard, click Create New Video, and select Talking Avatar rather than a template-based format if you want simple output.

Step 3: Select your avatar

Choose from the stock library or your custom Instant Avatar. For ads, choose an avatar that looks like a credible peer to your target audience. A talking head that looks like a local business owner will resonate differently than one that looks like a tech startup founder.

Step 4: Paste the script

In the text input box paste your script. HeyGen has a built-in character limit per slide. If your script is longer than 500 characters split it across multiple slides within the same project.

Step 5: Select voice

HeyGen has built-in voices or you can connect an ElevenLabs voice which is covered in the next lesson. For most use cases HeyGen's voices are acceptable. If you want a specific accent or style, ElevenLabs integration gives you more control. For UGC use a natural speaking pace and avoid the broadcast voices that sound too polished.

Step 6: Preview

Before rendering use the preview feature. Check lip sync on key words, check pacing, and confirm the hook lands in the first 3 seconds. Adjust script phrasing if anything sounds stiff.

Step 7: Render and download

Submit for rendering. Creator plan renders are processed in a queue and typically take 2 to 10 minutes depending on load. Download the MP4 when complete.

Step 8: Note the credit cost

1 credit equals 1 second of rendered video. A 45-second video costs 45 credits. On the Creator plan with 200 credits per month you get approximately 4 minutes and 20 seconds of total video. Plan your monthly video schedule accordingly.

Output Settings

When exporting from HeyGen the default output is 1080 by 1920 resolution which is vertical and correct for Reels, MP4 format, and 25fps frame rate.

For square format needed for Feed placements, crop in CapCut after download and do not re-render in HeyGen as it costs additional credits.

What HeyGen Cannot Do Well

Natural movement is limited because stock avatars have limited body movement and gestures look slightly stilted for longer videos. For 15 to 45 second Reels this is not a noticeable problem but for 2-minute explainers it becomes distracting.

Emotional range is also limited because the avatar will not convey surprise, laughter, or strong emotion convincingly. Scripts that rely on emotional delivery should use real camera footage or Instant Avatar with a higher-quality recording.

Fast-cut editing is not possible within HeyGen because it produces a continuous talking head. If your script calls for B-roll cutaways those need to be added in CapCut after the fact.

Instant Avatar Setup

Record 2 to 5 minutes of yourself looking directly at a camera and speaking at a normal pace. The words do not matter and you can read anything.

What matters: consistent lighting on your face from the front with no side lighting, a stable camera on a tripod or leaning against something, no music or background noise, a consistent background where a plain wall is ideal, and staying in frame throughout.

Upload to HeyGen under Avatars then Create Avatar then Instant Avatar. Processing completes in a few minutes. The first generation is usually 80% quality so re-record with a longer clip or better lighting if you want improvement.

Meta Disclosure Requirement

When running HeyGen avatar videos as Meta ads in 2026 you must select "AI-generated" in the ad creative disclosure section in Meta Ads Manager. Failure to disclose results in ad rejection, policy strikes, and eventual account suspension. The disclosure label does not meaningfully reduce performance because viewers in a scrolling context do not click through to check ad labels before engaging with content.
