Lead Magnets: Give Something to Get Something

A lead magnet is the thing you give away in exchange for someone's email address.

It is the offer on your landing page. Without one you are asking people to give you their contact details for nothing. With a good one you are giving them a clear reason to say yes.

Why lead magnets work

People guard their email addresses. They have been burned by spam. They do not hand their contact details to strangers without a reason.

A lead magnet removes this resistance by making a trade: give me your email and I will give you something valuable for free.

When the value of what you are giving exceeds the perceived cost of sharing an email address, people say yes. The higher the perceived value of your lead magnet, the higher your conversion rate.

What makes a great lead magnet

The best lead magnets share four characteristics.

Specific: "The Complete Guide to Marketing" is terrible. "5 Email Subject Lines That Increased My Open Rate to 47%" is specific. Specific lead magnets promise one clear outcome and nothing vague.

Fast: people do not want a 200-page ebook. They want something they can use in 10 minutes. Shorter and faster is better than longer and comprehensive every time.

Immediately useful: they should be able to use it today. Templates, checklists, and toolkits score very well here. Long courses and extensive guides score worse.

Directly related to what you sell: your lead magnet should be a preview of the value you provide. If someone downloads it, uses it, and gets a result, they are already a warm lead for whatever you offer next.

Lead magnet types from fastest to most complex

Checklist: a list of steps to complete a specific task. Takes about 30 minutes to build. Works for any niche.

Template: a pre-built document they fill in. Takes one to two hours to build. Best for business, marketing, and operations topics.

Cheat sheet: a one-page reference for a complex topic. Takes about one hour to build. Best for technical or process-heavy subjects.

Toolkit: a collection of tools, resources, and links. Takes two to three hours to build. Works for any niche.

Email mini-course: five to seven emails teaching one skill. Takes three to five hours to build. Best for education and coaching.

Guide or PDF: an in-depth walkthrough of a topic. Takes four to eight hours to build. Best for premium audiences.

Interactive tool: a quiz or calculator. Takes four to eight hours to build. Best for high-engagement niches.

Video training: one specific lesson delivered on video. Takes two to four hours to build. Best for topics that benefit from demonstration.

For your first landing page, build a checklist, template, or cheat sheet. They are fast to create, high in perceived value, and immediately useful to the person who downloads them.

How to build your lead magnet with Claude

Once you know what type and topic you want, use this prompt:

Create a [TYPE — checklist, template, cheat sheet, or guide] about [TOPIC].
Target audience: [WHO THEY ARE]
The specific problem this solves: [THE PROBLEM]
The outcome they get from using it: [THE RESULT]

Format requirements:

- Title: [YOUR LEAD MAGNET TITLE]
  • Length: short and practical. One page for a checklist, three to five pages maximum for a guide.
  • Tone: [CONVERSATIONAL, PROFESSIONAL, OR DIRECT]
  • Make it immediately actionable — they should be able to use it today

If it is a checklist: numbered list of specific steps with a checkbox format

If it is a template: include placeholder text they fill in with instructions for each section

If it is a cheat sheet: one-page format with clear sections and a scannable layout

Output as clean text that I can copy and format into a PDF.

After Claude generates it, copy the content into a Google Doc or Word document, format it cleanly, and export as a PDF. That PDF is your lead magnet.

Your action right now

Decide on your lead magnet before moving to the next lesson. Write down three things: what type it will be, what specific problem it solves, and what the title is.

You will reference these in the master build prompt and when you set up your lead capture form in the lessons that follow.
