Course 01 · Lesson 7 of 12
Your First Prompt: Build Something
You have Claude Code installed. Your project folder is open. Now we are going to build something real.
Not a tutorial example. Not a "hello world" that means nothing. An actual personal web page with your name, your story, and your words, built entirely by Claude in the next five minutes.
The most important thing to know about prompting
Most beginners write prompts like instructions for a machine. They say things like "create a div with a class of header and set the background color to blue." This is the wrong approach. You are not writing code. You are describing an outcome.
Write your prompts like you are briefing a skilled designer sitting right next to you. Describe what you want the result to look and feel like. Claude Code responds much better to outcomes than to technical steps.
Your first build: step by step
Step 1: Make sure your project folder is open.
In the Desktop App, you should see my-first-build as the active project in the sidebar.
In the terminal on Mac or Linux, type pwd and press Enter to confirm you are inside the my-first-build folder. On Windows Command Prompt, type cd and press Enter instead.
Step 2: Use this prompt. Fill in your own information where you see the square brackets.
Prompt:
Build me a personal introduction page called index.html.
Include:
My name: [YOUR NAME] - display it large at the top What I do: [WHAT YOU DO] - one sentence below the name My favourite quote: [YOUR QUOTE] - styled in a box, slightly italic
Design requirements:
Dark background (dark navy or charcoal)
Clean white or off-white text
Modern, minimal feel with no clutter
Looks good on a laptop screen
No external libraries needed - pure HTML and CSS only
Make it something I would actually be proud to show someone.
Step 3: Approve the actions.
After you send the prompt, Claude Code will show you what it is about to do before it does anything. You will see a message like "I am going to create index.html in your my-first-build folder." Press Y or click Approve to let it proceed. The file will be created in a few seconds.
Step 4: Open the file in your browser.
Go to your Desktop, open the my-first-build folder, find index.html, and drag it directly into your web browser (Chrome, Safari, or Firefox). Your page loads immediately.
That is your first build. You described it in plain English and Claude Code built it.
Step 5: Make a change.
If you want to adjust anything, just tell Claude what you do not like. Here are examples of how to do that:
Prompt:
The text is too small. Make the name bigger.
Prompt:
Change the background to pure black.
Prompt:
Add a second section below the quote with three things I am currently working on.
Every change happens in seconds. No code. No copy-paste. Just conversation.
What just happened and why it matters
You did not write a single line of code. You did not look up any HTML syntax. You did not sit through a four-hour tutorial.
You described what you wanted and Claude Code built it. The file exists on your computer right now. You can open it in a browser, send it to a friend, or keep building on top of it.
This is the foundation of everything you will build in this community. Websites, web apps, landing pages, games, automations, AI agents. It all starts with the same skill: describing what you want clearly and letting Claude Code do the work.
Your action right now
✓ Write your personalised version of the prompt above
✓ Run it in Claude Code
✓ Open index.html in your browser
✓ Make one change by telling Claude what to adjust
Move to the next lesson. We will look at the full interface so you always know where everything is and what every button actually does.
