Claude Code vs Claude AI: What Is Different

This is the question that confuses almost everyone who joins this community.

"I already use Claude AI every day. What is Claude Code? Is it the same thing with a different name?"

No. They are completely different tools. Here is exactly how.

Claude AI (claude.ai): The Chatbot

Claude AI is what you access at claude.ai in your browser.

It is a conversation interface. You type. It replies. That is the full extent of what it can do on its own.

If you want it to help you build something, here is the actual workflow: you describe your project, it generates some code and shows it to you in the chat, you copy that code, you paste it into a file on your computer, you open it in a browser or run it, something breaks, you copy the error message, you paste it back into the chat, and you repeat.

Claude AI has no access to your computer. It cannot see your files. It cannot run anything. It only knows what you paste into the chat window.

Claude AI is like texting instructions to a friend who is sitting across the city. Every piece of information has to travel through messages.

Claude Code: The AI Agent

Claude Code is not a browser tool. It lives inside your computer.

It has direct access to your files and folders, your terminal, and your entire project.

When you ask Claude Code to build something, it does not paste code at you. It opens the actual file on your computer, writes the code directly into it, saves it, and runs it to check that it works.

Claude Code is like having that same friend sitting right next to you at your desk. They can see everything on your screen, open your files themselves, and just do the work.

How they compare

Claude AI runs in your browser. Claude Code runs inside your computer.

Claude AI has no file access and only sees what you paste into it. Claude Code has full access to your files and folders.

Claude AI cannot run commands. Claude Code can run commands, install packages, and check for errors automatically.

Claude AI requires copy-paste for every single change. Claude Code edits your files directly with no copying required.

Claude AI is best for quick questions and brainstorming. Claude Code is best for actually building things.

The one-sentence version

Claude AI tells you what to build. Claude Code builds it.

Does this replace Claude AI?

No. They are different tools for different moments.

Use Claude AI when you want to think something through, ask a quick question, or explore an idea before you build it.

Use Claude Code when you want to actually build something: a website, a landing page, a web app, an automation, a game.
