What Is Claude Code?

Here is the old way most people use AI.

They open ChatGPT or Claude AI in a browser. They type a question. They get some code back. They copy it. They paste it into their project. Something breaks. They copy the error. They paste it back into the chat. They get a fix. They copy that. They paste it again. Something else breaks.

This cycle goes on until they either give up or somehow, by luck, it works.

Claude Code is a completely different category of tool.

Claude Code is an AI Agent

Claude Code is not a chatbot. It is an AI agent.

Here is what that means in plain English.

A chatbot answers questions. You talk to it, it talks back. That is all it can do.

An AI agent takes actions. It does not just tell you what to do. It goes and does it itself.

Claude Code sits inside your computer. It has direct access to your files, your folders, and your terminal. When you ask it to build something, it does not give you instructions. It opens your files, writes the code, saves the changes, and checks if it worked. All on its own.

You describe what you want. Claude Code builds it.

What Claude Code can actually do

These are real things Claude Code does, not marketing claims:

It reads your project files and understands what you are working on without you explaining everything from scratch every time.

It writes and edits files directly. It opens your files and makes changes itself. No copy-paste required.

It runs commands. It can install packages, run your app, check for errors, and fix them automatically.

It can search the web. If it needs the latest documentation or an API reference, it finds it mid-task.

It fixes its own mistakes. It can see when something breaks and attempt a fix before it even asks you.

It connects to other tools. GitHub, your file system, external services. All of it can be connected.

Three things to know going in

First: it has a working memory called a context window. Think of this as the amount of information Claude can hold in its head during one session. It is large but not unlimited. You will learn how to work with this, not against it.

Second: it asks before it acts. By default, Claude Code shows you what it is about to do and asks for your approval before running any command. You are always in control. You can make it faster later. But to start, you will see every action before it happens.

Third: it can make mistakes. Claude Code is not perfect. It might misunderstand what you asked. It might fix one thing and accidentally break another. This is normal. The next few lessons will show you exactly how to handle it when this happens, and it is much easier than you think.
