Local SEO in 2026 - What Actually Changed
What you will walk away with: a clear understanding of what local SEO actually is right now, separating real changes from hype.
The three core factors Google uses to rank local businesses have not changed in over a decade. Relevance, distance, and prominence. Every single piece of optimization you do is strengthening one of these three. What changed in 2026 is how Google measures each one, and the fact that the same signals now also feed AI search engines.
Relevance is how well your business matches what someone searched. Distance is how close you are. Prominence is how well-known and trusted you are. That is it. Anyone selling you tricks beyond this is selling tricks.
What is actually different in 2026:
AI search engines now matter as much as Google itself for local discovery. ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend businesses in conversational answers. Google's own AI Mode and AI Overviews are showing up on 48% of all searches, and 68% of local searches. The same Google Business Profile signals power all of them, but the content on your website now has to be structured for AI to extract and cite.
Google's algorithm now penalizes profiles that look static. If you have not posted, uploaded photos, or interacted with your profile in 30 days, your visibility drops significantly. Active management is a ranking signal now, not just a nice-to-have.
Google added AI-driven enforcement in April 2026. The Gemini-powered system now screens profile edits and reviews before they go live. Review gating (filtering positive vs negative reviews) is actively enforced and gets profiles suspended. Asking customers to mention staff names by first and last name is now banned. Incentivized reviews are banned, including offering discounts to remove negative reviews.
Schema markup matters more than ever because AI engines use it to verify what your business actually does. Without proper LocalBusiness schema, AI engines often cannot confidently cite you.
Citations still matter but consistency matters more than volume. Forty perfect citations beat 400 sloppy ones. Google's algorithm now penalizes inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across the web.
Reviews are now a confidence threshold, not a ranking gradient. ChatGPT only recommends businesses with average ratings above 4.0 and active response rates. Below those thresholds, you are not ranked lower. You are excluded entirely.
What did not change despite the hype: SEO is not dead. Local SEO is alive and well. Google traffic still dominates for local searches. AI search is an additional layer, not a replacement.
