Citations - The Trust Signals That Still Matter
What you will walk away with: a clean citation profile across the directories that actually move the needle, without wasting time on dead ones.
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites. Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, your industry-specific directories. Each citation tells Google "this business is real, here is independent confirmation." Consistency is the only thing that matters. Forty perfectly consistent citations beat 400 inconsistent ones.
The citations that actually matter in 2026:
Tier 1 (every business needs these): Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook Business Page, Yelp, Yellow Pages, Foursquare.
Tier 2 (industry-specific): Find the 5 to 10 most-used directories in your industry. Restaurants need TripAdvisor and Zomato. Plumbers need HomeAdvisor, Angi, and Thumbtack. Doctors need Healthgrades and Zocdoc. Wedding businesses need The Knot and WeddingWire. Search "[your industry] directories" and you will find them.
Tier 3 (local): Your local chamber of commerce, local business associations, neighborhood directories. These have lower volume but high trust signals because they are tied to your actual community.
How to build a citation list with Claude Code:
- Read business-info.md. Find every relevant online directory I should list my
- business in, organized by tier.
Use web search to find:
- Tier 1: Major general directories (Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, Facebook,
Yellow Pages, Foursquare)
- Tier 2: The top 5 to 10 directories specific to my industry
- Tier 3: Local directories specific to my city or region
For each directory, give me:
- The directory name
- The URL to submit my business
- Whether it is free or paid (and roughly what it costs if paid)
- The estimated time to set up
Format the result as a clean table I can work through one row at a time.
Then go directory by directory and submit. The most important rule: your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) must be identical across every single citation. Same business name spelled the same way. Same address format. Same phone number format. If your Google Business Profile says "ABC Plumbing Services" and your Yelp says "ABC Plumbing Svc," that inconsistency hurts your ranking.
Track your citations in a simple spreadsheet. Claude can help:
Create a CSV file called citations-tracker.csv with these columns:
- Directory Name, URL, Tier, Submitted Date, Status (Pending/Live/Rejected),
- Listing URL, Notes.
- Pre-populate it with all the citations from the list you just gave me.
Save this. Update it as you submit. Set a reminder to audit citations every 6 months because directories close, change formats, or require resubmission.
If you have budget and want to skip the manual work: BrightLocal Citation Builder ($30 to $100 depending on volume) and Whitespark are the two legitimate paid services. They submit on your behalf and maintain consistency. Avoid Yext unless you specifically need their multi-platform sync, because they hold your listings hostage if you stop paying.
