Build a 1-Person AI Business with Claude/Claude's Memory: CLAUDE.md

Course 02 · Lesson 2 of 10

Why Claude Forgets You: & Why That Costs You Time

In Claude Code Foundations you learned about the context window, which is Claude's working memory for a single session. When a session runs too long, Claude starts losing track of earlier parts of the conversation.

But there is a different problem we have not addressed yet.

Claude forgets you completely between sessions.

Every time you close Claude Code and open it again, even five minutes later, Claude starts fresh. Completely blank. It does not remember what you are building, what you told it last week, what went wrong and had to be fixed, that you prefer simple code over complex solutions, that your website uses specific colours you spent an hour deciding on, or that you are not a developer and need things explained clearly.

Every session. Zero. From scratch.

What this looks like in practice

You open Claude Code to add a new section to your website. You type: "Add a testimonials section to my website."

Claude does not know what your website looks like. It does not know your colour scheme. It does not know whether you prefer plain HTML or JavaScript components. It does not know if you have already built three testimonial sections on other projects and always run into the same issues.

So Claude makes assumptions. Some of them are wrong. You spend time correcting them. You explain the project again. You paste in context you have already given before. Sometimes you start over entirely.

This is not Claude being bad at its job. This is Claude doing its best with zero information about you.

The real cost

Imagine spending the first ten minutes of every session re-explaining your project and preferences to Claude.

Over the course of building one product across dozens of sessions, that is hours of your time spent on setup instead of building. The more projects you run, the worse this gets.

The permanent fix

A file called CLAUDE.md. You create it once per project and once globally for your personal preferences. Claude reads it automatically every time a session starts.

Before you type a single word, Claude already knows who you are, what you are building, and how you like to work.

That is what this course covers.

Your action right now

Think about the last time you started a Claude Code session and had to re-explain your project or preferences from scratch. Hold that specific frustration in mind. Your CLAUDE.md will eliminate it permanently.

Move to the next lesson. We are going to look at exactly what CLAUDE.md is and how it works.
