Frontend Design Skill: Most Important Install

If you only install one skill, make it this one here is why and how to use it

The frontend design skill was built by Anthropic's own design team. It encodes the visual standards professional frontend developers and designers apply to every project: the same standards that make the difference between a site that looks AI-generated and one that looks like it was worth paying for.

What It Does

When you activate the frontend design skill Claude stops making generic choices and starts making deliberate ones. Specifically it avoids the vibe-coded patterns including purple gradients, glassmorphism, neon glow, and generic icon cards. It applies a proper type scale instead of arbitrary font sizes. It enforces consistent spacing instead of guessing at padding values. It treats mobile as a first-class experience and not an afterthought. And it self-audits the result after building, catching inconsistencies before you have to find them yourself.

In practice the first version of a website built with this skill active is noticeably better than without it. The gap between the two outputs is large enough that this skill alone justifies learning how to install skills.

How to Use It

After installing from the Desktop App skills browser, reference it in any web-related prompt:

  • Build me a personal portfolio website.
  • Use the /frontend-design skill throughout this build.
  • Follow the design rules in @CLAUDE.md.
  • [rest of your prompt]

Or use it for a standalone audit of existing work:

  • Use the /frontend-design skill to audit my current website.
  • Check every section covering typography, color consistency, spacing, and mobile view.
  • Fix every issue you find and report what you changed.

Or for a specific fix:

  • The hero section looks generic. Use the /frontend-design skill to rethink it.
  • It should feel intentional and professional and not like a template.

Combining It With Your CLAUDE.md

The skill sets the quality standard. Your CLAUDE.md sets the project specifics. They work together.

The workflow for any web build is: open your project with the CLAUDE.md that has your design rules, activate the frontend design skill in your prompt, let Claude build following your CLAUDE.md for project context and the skill for design quality, then run the audit before deploying.

This combination is why some people's Claude Code builds look like agency work and others look like a first attempt.

Testing It Yourself

To see the difference clearly, run these back to back.

Without the skill:

Build me a simple landing page for a freelance video editor.

With the skill:

  • Build me a simple landing page for a freelance video editor.
  • Use the /frontend-design skill. Follow all design quality checks.

Open both in a browser side by side. The difference is immediate in layout hierarchy, font choices, spacing, and how the sections flow into each other. Same Claude. Different instruction quality.

Your Action Right Now

Take any website project you built in Track 1 including your personal intro page, your portfolio, or anything similar.

Run this prompt:

  • Use the /frontend-design skill to audit my current website.
  • Check: typography consistency, color consistency, spacing, mobile view at 375px,
  • and any vibe-coded patterns.
  • Fix everything you find. Show me a list of what changed.
  • Open the file in the browser before and after. Note what changed.
  • This is now your standard practice before deploying any website or landing page.
