Mastering Google API Integration in Under 5 Minutes: A Simple Guide for n8n Users

In this fast-paced world of automation, getting your Google apps connected to n8n might seem daunting at first, but with the right approach, it’s easier than you think. Today, I’m going to walk you through how to set up your Google credentials in under 5 minutes, allowing you to connect Google services (like Google Drive, Gmail, Docs, and Sheets) to n8n. Ready to power up your automations? Let’s get started.

The Problem: Making Google Apps Work Together with n8n

You know the value of automating tasks — whether it’s managing appointments, sending emails, or organizing files. But what if I told you that with just a few clicks you could set up an automation that seamlessly connects your Google apps to n8n?

Google offers a wealth of powerful tools, but connecting them to n8n requires you to set up the right credentials. Without these credentials, your Google apps won’t talk to n8n, and the automations you need won’t be able to run.

So let’s fix that. Here’s how you can set up your Google credentials in under 5 minutes.

Step 1: Set Up Your Google Cloud Account

The first thing you need is a Google Cloud account. This is where you’ll manage all of your APIs and credentials. Here’s how to set it up:

  • Go to Google Cloud and create a new project (if you don’t have one already).
  • Name your project (I’ll call mine “Demo”) and click “Create.”
  • Once the project is created, select it and navigate to the Navigation Menu > APIs & Services > OAuth consent screen.
  • Click Create, and add a support email. You can skip extra information for now.
  • This is the first step — getting your Google Cloud project ready to work with n8n.

Step 2: Generate Your OAuth Credentials

Now that your project is set up, it’s time to get your OAuth credentials:

  • Click Create credentials in the left menu.
  • Select OAuth client ID, then choose Web Application.
  • Enter a name (again, “Demo” works for now) and add the authorized redirect URI provided by n8n.
  • This step is crucial because it ensures that n8n can securely access your Google account data.

Step 3: Connect Your Google Account to n8n

Once you have your OAuth credentials, the next step is to connect them to n8n. Here’s what to do:

Copy your OAuth client ID and secret and paste them into n8n.

You will then be prompted to sign in with your Google account.

After that, grant permission for n8n to access your Google services.

If all goes well, your Google account will be connected to n8n, and you’ll see the confirmation that the connection is successful.

Step 4: Enable APIs for Google Services (Drive, Gmail, Docs)

At this point, your Google account is connected, but n8n still needs permission to access specific services like Google Drive, Gmail, or Google Docs. Here’s how to enable the APIs:

Go back to Google Cloud and navigate to APIs & Services > Library.

Search for the Google service you want to enable (e.g., Google Drive API, Gmail API, etc.).

Click Enable next to the APIs you need.

This grants the necessary permissions for n8n to use Google Drive, Gmail, Docs, or any other Google app in your workflows.

    Step 5: Test the Connection

Now that everything is set up, let’s test the connection:

  • Go to n8n, open the Google app (e.g., Google Drive, Gmail), and create a simple workflow.
  • Test it by creating a Google Sheet, sending an email, or uploading a file. If everything works, congratulations! Your Google credentials are properly set up, and you’re ready to create automated workflows.
  • Why This Matters

Setting up Google credentials for n8n might seem like a small task, but it’s a powerful enabler. Once everything is connected, you can automate tedious tasks like:

  • Automatically saving emails to Google Drive
  • Sending personalized Gmail responses based on triggers
  • Organizing files and documents without lifting a finger
  • By setting up your Google services and linking them to n8n, you open up a world of possibilities for automating your workflow.

That’s it! You’ve now learned how to set up your Google credentials in under 5 minutes, opening up new ways to automate your Google apps and create seamless workflows. Happy automating!
